It's 1976 and Mrs. Nicholson is my teacher in school. We read Treasure Island in class and completed a project on it. Peter Thompson is my best friend and this would remain the case for the next 3 years.
One morning I didn't want to go to school so my dad had to drag me out of the car and into the classroom. I beat on my teacher as she kept me in class while my dad left. Nothing like being self absorbed and only thinking of myself.
This year we had a new kid in school, Robert. He was teased a lot, we used to call him "smelly Robert." I don't think he smelled but kids can be really cruel to one another. I wasn't a bad kid yet, I just wanted to fit in so I participated in the teasing. Sorry Robert.
1976 was also the year when the many women took the streets in Northern Ireland to march for peace. My mum and my granny both marched. They carried umbrellas with them to protect themselves from people who were throwing stones at the marchers as they walked through some of the 'troubled' areas of Belfast. As John Lennon said, "All we are saying, is give peace a chance." (perhaps a lesson for today!)
I'm trying to remember which year we moved house... can't recall if it was '75 or '76. I'll have to check with mum on that one. Either way by 1976 we were in our new home. I didn't like the move at first but came to love our life in Greenview Park.
