Senator John McCain said, It's clear we have to have the high moral ground." That why he is happy that the compromise bill has been embraced by party leaders and the White House.
It strikes me as amazing that we are talking about banning Waterboarding, method of information extraction (torture), that simulates drowning. I already thougth the Geneva Convention was clear on this sort of thing. The other two "major" forms of information extraction that will be banned are extreme sleep deprivation (from which people have been known to die) and forced hypothermia.
Listen, I don't know how to best defend freedom, but one thing I'm certain of... we can't do it by violating the freedom of others. We believe in freedom of speech and we also believe that a defendant has the right to remain silent so as not to incriminate themselves. Yet we are apparently willing to violate these principles if you are not one of us (that is American or legal resident).
Thank you John McCain for raising this issue into the arena of public debate.
